Tackles4Cancer along with former NFL Player and cancer survivor, Dominic Austin, will host the Cancer Socks 5K (run/walk) in celebration of the 31st Annual National Cancer Survivors Day. The day provides an opportunity for America’s more than 15.5 million cancer survivors to connect with other survivors, celebrate milestones, and recognize those who have supported them along the way. Austin is the Founder of Tackles4Cancer, a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides transportation assistance for cancer patients. The race gear will feature a unique pair of Tackles4Cancer socks to bring awareness to transportation being a major roadblock for 20% of diagnosed cancer patients.
The event is sponsored by Baylor College of Medicine Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center. It coordinates research and patient care across several partner organizations including the Harris Health System, which provides 70% of cancer care to the underserved community at it’sBen Taub General Hospital and Smith Clinics. Center members also provide adult care and conduct research at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, and Baylor/St. Luke's Medical Center. Texas Children's Cancer Center at Texas Children’s Hospital is also a center partner and cares for 50% of all pediatric cancer patients in Texas and 90% in Houston.
The proceeds from this event will benefit cancer patients in underserved communities that need transportation assistance.
The event will be timed by Fast Lane Services and results will be made available after the race.
