Description

Welcome to the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, a part of the Ashley National Forest in Rock Springs, Wyoming.  Race on the Rock Triathlon, Duathlon, Aquabike, and Aquathlon is in its fifth year. We are the only USAT Sanctioned Event in the State of Wyoming.

The race this year will feature and open water swim and a closed bike and run course. The scenery is amazing and you will enjoy the challenge of racing at about 6300ft.

We are a smaller race, pretty low key we are all about fun. We broadcast the race live on the internet, everyone gets the race shirt, finishers do get a medal, we do have goodie bags, and we have a special award to present each year called the Crompton/Shockey award for spirit. Both Jason Crompton and Marvin Shockey were well known triathletes and both were huge supporters of this race.  Sadly they both passed away in accidents prior to our 2016 race.

This swim is wet suit legal and the morning termperatures could be near 50-degrees, by the end of the race the temperatures usually are in the low 80's.

The race proceeds are donated to the Rock Springs Professional Firefighters who are sponsors of this event.

If you are looking for a race to close out your summer and have a desire to see some of the most beautiful scenery in the world - Yellowstone is just 3 hours away - Come join us for a great, fun, low key race in Wyoming!!

Event details and schedule

Packet Pickup will be conducted on 8/24/18 at the Bike and Trike Bike Shop on Broadway in downtown Rock Springs. If you need any bike attention that is the time to ask. We will have bike help on hand race morning but Bike and Trike's capabilities will be limited since they will be on location. Packet pick up is available the morning of the race as well at the Race Site.

Our race site hotel is the My Place Hotel located off exit 103 from I-80. Call the hotel directly for race rates:  (307) 362-5977

Race morning you will need approximately 30 minutes to get to the race site.  Take I-80 W from the My Place Hotel and exit at Exit 99. Turn left (south) onto HWY 191.  Continue on this road for approximately 15 miles, there will be a sign at Cty Rd 33 (the turn is just past a pull off area for vehicles)  Follow Cty Rd 33 until you see the right turn for the Flaming Gorge Boat Ramp. Drive to the boat ramp parking lot unload your equipment, and then park your vehicle in the campground area We will have some vehicles to bring you back to the transition site although the walk isn't all that far. It will be rather dark at 530am as the sun will just start coming up, so you will want to bring a flashlight or a headlamp to get ready. We will have some lighting at the transition area, but it is still helpful to have a flashlight handy.

Transition will open at 6am. The first swim start time is 7am parking is a little bit of a distance from the transition area, so it is best to drop your things off, park your car and come back for set up. The transition area is in a parking lot so it is best if you bring a towel to assist you during your transitions so you have something to stand on. Feel free to bring a bucket to sit on.

Hard copy waivers will be available to sign at check in ID is required and your USAT Card should also be available to check at packet pick up or sign in. Internet is rather spotty at the gorge, so if you are using a digital card, be sure to load it before you lose internet signal.

Transition opens 6am

Olympic swim starts: 7am

Sprint swim starts: 7:05am

Aquathlon/Aquabike starts: 7:10-

Youth Swim starts: 7:15

Duathlon start: 7:30

The swim is an out and back swim starting in the water by the boat ramp and exiting the same place. The bike route will take you onto Cty Rd 33 (the way you drove in) This road will be closed down starting at 730am and will be closed until the last runner is back to the boat ramp at the end of the race. I will be posting additional information on the race route on our Facebook page.

I would recommend you wear a light jacket that morning in preparation for the race. The swim is going to be swimsuit legal, the air is generally in the lower 50's every morning, so you may want to consider a light shirt or arm warmers for the bike portion of the race.  The sun generally will heat things up quickly once it rises, temperatures at the end of the race should be near 80. We have had four years with no rain, I really don't anticipate any.

We will have some food available for after the race, and an awards ceremony as we get to the end of the day.
