32nd Annual Bay Bridge Run Walk!

The Navy’s 32nd Bay Bridge Run/Walk is hosted by the Navy Region Southwest Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Program. The unique 4-mile run/walk has a one-of-a-kind spectacular panoramic view as participants make their way to Coronado’s beautiful Tidelands Park from downtown San Diego over the Coronado Bay Bridge. During the finish line celebration, runners receive a Finisher’s medal, event T-shirt, and enjoy the opportunity to visit sponsor booths. Plus, all participants are eligible for drawing prizes and complimentary transportation back to downtown via bus or ferry. You will be crossing the majestic Coronado Bay Bridge to raise funds to support Quality of Life Programs for Navy personnel. MWR Quality of Life programs support the 500,000+ member of our San Diego Military Family.

 

MWR provides healthy and affordable fitness and recreation opportunities at each of the five Navy bases in San Diego County. MWR operates multiple gymnasiums and fitness centers, swimming pools and beaches, free movie theaters, bowling lanes, golf courses, discount ticket offices, marinas, gear rental centers, youth and teen recreation centers, child care centers, food and beverage facilities, and more.

 

MWR is also the event planner for the military. Beyond the Bridge Run, we produce fitness and sports competitions, educational activities, military child appreciation events, and seasonal celebrations such as our Spring Fling, Freedom Festival, Haunted Motel & Pumpkin Patch, Family Holiday Party and on-going Community Recreation trips, leisure skills and recreation programs. 

Event details and schedule

RACE START LINE/COURSE

Runner start 8:00 am / Walkers start 8:10 am

This is a sanctioned USAT&F 4-mile course. Our start line is at One Park Blvd. at Harbor Dr. between the Hilton San Diego Bayfront and the San Diego Convention Center. The course travels south along Harbor Dr. to Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy. Participants head east to National Ave., then up and over the Coronado Bay Bridge. The race finishes in Coronado’s Tidelands Park. Expect flat streets, an incline up the bridge and a decline down the bridge. Walkers are encouraged to bring cameras to take some great photos of San Diego and Coronado from on top of the bridge! Baby strollers, wheelchairs and guide dogs are permitted. Skateboards, bikes, in-line skates, race wheelchairs and pets are prohibited with the exception of service animals. All participants must be on the bridge by 8:45 am, approximately 1 mile, to allow for the reopening of traffic lanes.

 

CHIP TIMING

Only those registered as a TIMED RUNNER will receive a timing chip with their bib number by mail. Place your timing chip on your shoe. Either foot is acceptable. No need to be head of the pack! Your official race time begins when you step on the timing mat directly under the CHIP TIMING scaffolding. Keep your timing chip as a souvenir!

 

RUN TO REMEMBER

The Navy’s 32nd Bay Bridge Run/Walk is proud to partner with Navy Gold Star Program to honor Surviving Family Members of Service Members who lost their lives while on active duty. You too can show your appreciation for their sacrifice by participating in this year’s “I Run to Remember” campaign. Write the name of a Fallen Service Member on the space provided on your race bib or honor all Fallen Service Members with a tribute. Then run/walk to support Navy Gold Star Families, as well as current active duty military and their families.

RACE BIB NUMBERS

All participants MUST wear their race bib number on the front in order to cross the Coronado Bridge. The number is required to record your time and place, and to pick up your event T-shirt and Finisher’s Medal. Do not remove or pin the tear-off tag, or alter the number in any way. Numbers are non-transferable so no one else may wear a number assigned to you.

 

RUNNER’S GEAR

You may check in your warm-ups at the start line near registration. All items turned in by 7:30 am will be available for pick up at the finish line by 8:00 am. All items turned in after 7:30 am will be available after 9 am. All bags subject to search. Do not leave any bags unattended at any time during the event. Do not pack valuables. MWR is not responsible for lost items. Bags may be claimed at the finish line when you present your race bib number.

 

FINISHER’S MEDAL

Each participant who crosses the finish line receives a commemorative finisher’s medal. Simply redeem the tear-away tag from your race bib at the FINISHER’S MEDAL BOOTH near the finish line to collect your medal.

 

T-SHIRTS

The Navy’s 32nd Bay Bridge Run/Walk high quality T-shirts are distributed to all registered participants at the Pre-Race Packet Pick-Up event and at the finish line in Tidelands Park. You must present your race bib to claim your T-shirt. Sizes available while supplies last.

 

UNIQUE AWARDS

Awards are presented to the TOP THREE (3) finishers in each AGE division and the overall TEAM division at the awards table. The OVERALL MALE and OVERALL FEMALE will also win two (2) round trip tickets courtesy of Alaska Airlines to anywhere Alaska Airlines flies!

 

POST-RUN/WALK PARTY

Invite your friends to cheer for you at the finish line and celebrate at the post race party at Tidelands Park in Coronado. Enjoy refreshments, live music and sponsor booths. Make plans to stick around for the awards presentation and terrific drawing prizes from approximately 9:45-10:30 am. You must be present to win drawing prizes.

MILITARY COMMAND CHALLENGE:

Win the title of “Largest Bridge Run/Walk Military Command” by participating in the non-race competitive Military Command Challenge. Assemble the largest group of military members, families and friends. Have each person register individually and write the command name in the Military Command Challenge space provided on the entry form. Register the most participants and win the title and a $1,000 for your Command Recreation Fund!

 

COMPETITIVE RUNNING TEAM:

The Navy 32nd Bay Bridge Run/Walk is looking for competitive running teams of five (5) people to compete. Assemble your group of five (5) running members, register together as a group and compete. The top three Running Teams are presented with an award at the ceremony at the end of the race.

 

PRE-RACE FOOD & BEVERAGE KIOSKS

Available at the RACE START. Avoid the morning rush! Plan on getting to the race early, bring a few dollars and enjoy a yogurt, fruit, coffee, juice or other light breakfast item. Food and beverage items for purchase provided by Hilton San Diego Bayfront.

 

WATER & RESTROOMS

Water and restrooms are available at the start and finish lines and also before the bridge at Chicano Park. It is your responsibility to remain sufficiently hydrated throughout the race. Please keep in mind, all participants must be on the bridge by 8:45 am, approximately 1 mile, to allow for the reopening of traffic lanes.

DIRECTIONS TO START LINE:

Traveling Southbound: take I-5 South, exit Front St., follow to Market St., turn left on Market St., follow to 5th Ave. Harbor Dr. is a few blocks south of Market St. Or for the Hilton and Convention Center parking garages, continue to Harbor Dr. See PARKING SUGGESTIONS section.

 

Traveling Northbound: take I-5 North, exit J St., turn left on J St., follow to 5th Ave. Harbor Dr. is a few blocks south of J St. Or for the Hilton and Convention Center parking garages, continue to Harbor Dr. See PARKING SUGGESTIONS section.

 

 

PARKING SUGGESTIONS:

Please plan ahead and arrive early! Come enjoy a pre-race warm up session and secure your parking spot right next to the start line. Prior to 7:00 am premier parking is available in the Hilton San Diego Bayfront parking garage for a fee. After 7:00 am, limited parking is available for a fee in the Convention Center parking garage through the 5th Ave and Harbor Drive entrance, as well as surrounding lots including the Padres lots. Parking meters in downtown San Diego are free on Sundays. Be sure to pay attention to posted signs.

 

 

TAKE THE TROLLEY!

Avoid the crowds and parking downtown, take the trolley or bus! Purchase an MTS Trolley/Bus Race Day Pass/Race Bib for $5.50 from us. Participants that pre-purchased an MTS Trolley/Bus Race Day Pass, your race bib will have an MTS stamp at the top. Participants must present their stamped race bib number to be identified as a pre-paid rider, no exceptions. Pass/Race Bib valid at any MTS Trolley or Bus station all day on 5/20/18. Plus, enjoy the MTS Family Deal where two children, 12 and under, ride FREE with each paying passenger 18 years and over. To get your combo Day Pass/Race Bib in advance from us, you must select it when you register. (Day Pass does not include MTS Access or COASTER.) This option is separate from the FREE bus shuttles and ferry after the race. See POST-RACE FERRY/SHUTTLE BUS info.

For Coronado residents, buses are available to shuttle participants from Tidelands Park, on Glorietta Blvd., to the start line Downtown from 6:30-7:15 am. Parking is not available at Tidelands Park and is very limited around Coronado, so please arrive early to ensure this service.

POST-RACE RETURN FERRY/SHUTTLE BUSES:

You have three FREE transportation choices for your return trip to the race start area.

 

RACE FERRY

All race participants may enjoy a FREE (included in race entry) from Coronado to San Diego ride on a special “RACE FERRY” courtesy of Flagship Cruises & Events. “RACE FERRIES” will run continuously from 9:45 am-12:45 pm from the Ferry Landing Marketplace, about three quarters of a mile from the finish line, and drop you off at the 5th Ave. Landing next to the Hilton San Diego Bayfront in back of the Convention Center.

 

PUBLIC FERRY - FREE WITH YOUR RACE BIB

The “PUBLIC FERRY” (included in race entry) leaves at 9:30 am, 10:30 am, 11:30 am and 12:30 pm on a space available basis. It leaves from the Ferry Landing Marketplace and drops you at the Broadway Pier near the Midway Museum, approximately 1-mile from the race start area. Participants must present their race bib number to be identified as a FREE rider, no exceptions. Friends and family of race participants are also invited to ride for a $4.75 fee (ages 3 and under at no charge). Tickets must be purchased prior to boarding from the Coronado Ferry Ticket Landing Dock, OR at the 5th Ave. Landing Kiosk at the start line.

 

BUSES

Buses are available from Tidelands Park, on Glorietta Blvd., to shuttle you back to the start line area next to the Hilton San Diego Bayfront FREE OF CHARGE starting at 8:30 am and continuing until festivities are over at approximately 11:00 am. Baby strollers and wheelchair access is available. Participants must present their race bib number to be identified as a FREE rider, no exceptions.

Service dogs are the only animals permitted on the ferry, buses and race course.

THERE IS NO DAY OF RACE REGISTRATION AVAILABLE.

Register by mail or online by 5/1/18 and receive your race bib, timing chip (if registered as a timed runner) and event information sheet by mail at no charge! Your race number and information sheet will be mailed to you one to two weeks prior to the event. The event is held rain or shine. No walk-in, phone or fax registration available.

PRE-RACE PACKET PICKUP

For all pre-registered participants, you may pick up your race packet on Saturday, May 19 from 9 am to 2 pm at Road Runner Sports, 5553 Copley Drive, San Diego, CA 92111. Your race packet includes your bib number, timing chip and T-shirt.

If you received your race bib number and timing chip in the mail, you MUST bring it with you to pick up your T-shirt. If you did not receive your race bib number by return mail, bring a valid ID and pick up your race bib number, timing chip and T-shirt. You may pick up the race bib numbers for friends and family with their authorization. We encourage you to attend the Pre-Race Packet Pick-Up Event. There is no day-of-race registration available!

If pre-race registration is available at the Pre-Race Packet Pick-Up at Road Runner Sports, fees will be: $50 adult, $43 active duty military and Seniors (65+), $28 children (4-12 yrs), team entry $255. On-site registration must be made in person – no one else can register for you on site. You may pick up your race bib, timing chip and T-shirt. RACE MORNING BIB PICK-UP

If you are unable to attend the Pre-Race Packet Pick-Up and did not receive your race bib number by mail, race morning bib pick-up is located at One Park Blvd. in the grass area adjacent to the Hilton San Diego Bayfront from 6:30-7:45 am only. There is no race day registration. Those who pick up their bib number race morning will receive their event T-shirt at the finish line area.

Bummed because you can’t make the race on May 20th? We’ve got you covered! Sign up for our Virtual Bridge Run. About two weeks prior to the LIVE Bridge Run, we’ll email you the distance and incline percentages so you can run The Navy’s Bay Bridge Run from anywhere you are! And to reward you, we will mail you a Finisher’s medal for putting in the effort if you chose!
